David Johnson featured on UofL’s faculty development podcast

David Johnson, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Health Management and Systems Sciences, was featured on an episode of Faculty Feed, a podcast by UofL’s Health Sciences Center Office of Faculty Development. Dr. Johnson described the formative rubric he developed that can be generalized to multiple disciplines to formatively assess learners. The rubric allows the instructor to see if critical thinking skills are improving over the course of a program. Listen now.

Maiying Kong elected member of International Statistical Institute 

Maiying Kong, PhD, Professor, Dept. of Bioinformatics & Biostatistics was elected as a member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI). ISI has over 4500 members from over 100 countries. Its mission is to lead, support and promote the understanding, development and good practice of statistics worldwide, by providing the core global network for statistics. It was established in 1885 and is one of the oldest scientific associations still active throughout the world today. As an elected member, Dr. Kong will be Be recognized internationally for her contribution to statistics. Learn more about ISI.

Child abuse screening tool available as app

Doug Lorenz, PhD, associate professor, Dept. of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, is part of an interdisciplinary research team at Lurie Children’s Hospital, that has created an app that implements the team’s published screening tool for detecting abuse in the pediatric ER. LCAST (Lurie Child Abuse Screening Tool) was released in January 2023. The app utilizes a 3D model of a child’s body (that allows users to select/identify parts of the body that have been injured in a child, answer other questions about the circumstances of the child’s injury, and then produces an evidence-based assessment of the likelihood that the injuries were the result of abuse. Robin Weiss elected to leadership position, DONA International 

SPHIS alumna and adjunct assistant professor, Robin Weiss, PhD, MPH, CLC, LCCE, has been elected President-Elect of Doulas of North America (DONA) International, the world’s first, largest, and leading doula certifying organization. Established in 1992, DONA is the only non-profit, member-led, volunteer-driven doula organization delivering evidence-based training, education, and certification worldwide. Dr. Weiss is a nationally recognized childbirth and postpartum educator, certified doula, doula trainer, and lactation counselor. She has been teaching at SPHIS for several years as part of the Dept. of Health Management and Systems Sciences. Dr. Weiss’ courses include Practice of Public Health (PHPH 420), Public Health in the United States (PHPH 523), and Human Resource Management in the Public Health Sector (PHMS 630). She is currently creating a new class, PHMS 520 Foundations of Public Health in Health Management, for MSHA students. Dr. Weiss has extensive experience writing, editing, and publishing, and is author of numerous books and guides including The Complete Illustrated Pregnancy Companion, The Better Way to Breastfeed Your Baby, and 150 Tips and Tricks for New Moms.
