Remembering Dr. Robert J. Esterhay

Robert J. Esterhay, MD, retired faculty in the Dept. of Health Management and Systems Sciences (HMSS) and founding HMSS chair, passed away on Jan. 25, 2023. October 14, 2024

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends as they grieve their loss

After 20 years of service to UofL, Dr. Esterhay retired in 2021 and was named Associate Professor Emeritus, an honorary title giving to those recognized for distinguished academic service at UofL.

As stated in his obituary, Dr. Esterhay “was passionate about population health and improving health data systems to empower patients.” He made significant contributions to the field through his leadership, service, and publications. He also had tremendous impact on his students, having mentored nearly 30 students through their PhD programs.

Dr. Esterhay will be missed but his legacy will be remembered.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to the Chris Dudley Foundation at https://www.chrisdudley.org, a basketball camp for children with Type 1 diabetes.
