SPHIS alumna creates graduate student travel endowment

Kimberly Hockman Mascaro, MPH '13, 2023 Alumni Fellow, and Joseph Mascaro, DMD, donated $25,000 to establish the Kimberly H. Mascaro Endowed Fund for Public Health Graduate Student Travel. October 10, 2024

The University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences (SPHIS) is pleased to announce that Kimberly Hockman Mascaro, MPH ’13, and Joseph Mascaro, DMD ’76, donated $25,000 to establish the Kimberly H. Mascaro Endowed Fund for Public Health Graduate Student Travel.

Ms. Mascaro is a proud UofL alumna and accomplished professional with more than 30 years of experience in healthcare. Beginning in 2007, Ms. Mascaro held key positions with Confluent Health, where she served as Chief Marketing Officer, and most recently the Executive Vice President of Innovations. She was named the 2023 SPHIS Alumni Fellow, which recognizes alumni who have honored their school through their professional achievements as well as their loyalty and support to their school or college. Additionally, she is a member of the SPHIS Community Advisory Board, and her outstanding contributions have been recognized by Louisville Business First's Enterprising Women program in 2020.

While a student in the school’s MPH program, Ms. Mascaro worked on a capstone project that evolved into ChooseWell Communities, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. This organization provides Louisville families in early recovery with access to affordable housing and community support through their children's fifth birthday. She is currently serving as CEO of ChooseWell Communities.

The Kimberly H. Mascaro Endowed Fund for Public Health Graduate Student Travel will support one or more master’s or doctoral students who are seeking travel opportunities to advance their pursuits or attend professional conferences. Mascaro said, "I am delighted and honored to have the privilege of funding a travel scholarship for a deserving graduate student in the School of Public Health and Information Sciences. This scholarship will enable the student to attend and present their original research at prestigious scholarly meetings, providing them with invaluable opportunities for professional growth and contribution to the field."

Join us in thanking Ms. Kimberly Hockman Mascaro and Dr. Joseph D. Mascaro for their generous gift. Students should contact Dr. Tammi Thomas for travel scholarship applications.

At SPHIS, building a healthier tomorrow for all means investment from our community today. The work of our students and faculty contributes to public health practice, research, and the public health workforce. Alumni and friends of the school who contribute help sustain a legacy of opportunity.
