Student Spotlight: Benefits of Studying Abroad

During the two-week program, students visited different healthcare settings such as the public health clinics, private hospitals, and the national hospital in Zanzibar, Tanzania. They assessed healthcare delivery performance at each healthcare facility and analyzed both organizational and community health needs. Baughman also shadowed hospital administrators and infectious disease physicians who shared their passion for improving the health outcomes in their community.

Baughman explained that gaining hands-on experience in an international health system benefited her studies as well as her position as an infectious disease medical case manager with UofL and the Kentucky Care Coordinator Program. “This trip helped me recognize that the core competencies of the MSHA program are valuable and relevant in drastically different healthcare settings,” she added.

The program itinerary also made it possible for Baughman to visit local attractions. “Between lectures on the beach, assignments by the pool, and our six hospital rotations, we had some free time nearly every day to explore Tanzania,” she said. Highlights included feeding the Aldabra giant tortoises on Changuu Island, swimming with wild dolphins in the Indian Ocean, and touring Kidichi Spice Farm.

Baughman recommends studying abroad to anyone who is considering it. She said, “I was able to develop skills and relationships during this experience that will last a lifetime. The east coast of Africa will always have a piece of my heart!”
